Hodgkin, Dorothy
   b. 1910, Cairo (Egypt); d. 1994
   Chemist
Hodgkin was a chemist who was little known until she won the 1964 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for her analysis of the most complex of the vitamins, B12. She began her academic career at Oxford and continued her analyses of complex biochem-ical substances at Cambridge from 1948 to 1956. She used X-rays to examine photographs of B12-related crystals. She also helped to conduct a large survey of the sterols (solid, mostly unsaturated, polycyclic alcohols such as cholesterol, derived from plants or animals). In 1961 she collaborated with the American crystallographer P.Galen Lenhert to complete the analysis of vitamin B12 in its natural occurrences. She also worked on the structure of penicillin and of many other important biochemicals.
